Volunteer roles available

Befriending

Become a befriender (one-to-one visiting) to offer companionship to someone who is lonely or isolated. These volunteers regularly visit elderly clients in their own homes each week, usually for one or two hours, on a mutually agreed day and time. Befriending is an incredibly rewarding experience and makes a huge impact on the person you visit. You can read some of our volunteer stories here.

Telephone Befriending

Become a telephone befriender to offer a valuable line to the outside world. These volunteers telephone their clients once or twice a week for a chat and a catch up. A great option is you live further away but still want to provide companionship.

Lunch Club Helpers

Join our merry band of lunch club volunteers. Our Lunch Club operates on Mondays and Thursdays between 10am and 3pm at the Vibast Centre near Old Street, giving local residents the opportunity to get out and enjoy company and a meal. Fresh meals are prepared, cooked and served entirely by the volunteers who help out. We always need volunteers to join our team and help to prepare and cook food, serve meals, make tea, wash up, call Bingo, set up and clear away tables and chairs and of course socialise and chat with clients.

Gardening

Brush up your green fingers and help an elderly person to maintain their garden and keep it looking tidy.

Drivers

Become a highly valuable driver for FCV Dorcas. Drivers are always needed for our wheelchair-accessible mini-buses for Lunch Club transport, shopping trips, outings, social events – both on weekdays and weekends. Experience of driving larger vehicles and an appropriate driving licence are essential. Volunteers must be aged over 25 years.

Escorts

Become an essential escort, assisting clients on and off the transport vehicle, helping to push wheelchairs during shopping trips, outings and Lunch club.

Office Administration

Helping with general office administration – usually 2-3 hours a week at a mutually convenient day and time. Helping for example to maintain our client and volunteer database, contact volunteers and clients to request information, or generally helping in the office.
